What’s the Difference Between Used and CPO
Used. Pre-owned. Certified pre-owned. You’ve probably heard those terms used a lot by Phoenix used car dealers. What do those terms mean? What is the difference between used and certified pre-owned (CPO)? You have questions. We have answers. Check out our CPO vs. used comparison below to get started.
What is the Difference Between Used and Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles?
So, what is the difference between used and certified pre-owned vehicles, exactly? While both types of cars are, in fact, used, certified pre-owned vehicles have gone through a certification process by their respective manufacturers. CPO cars are late-model and under warranty.
CPO vs. Used: Cost
It may sound great to get a used car that has gone through a certification process. And it is nice to have the peace of mind that comes with knowing your car is covered by warranty. But you will pay for that perceived peace of mind. In fact, cost can be the biggest difference between used and certified pre-owned cars. And most drivers who choose to buy used do so because they either can’t afford or don’t want to pay the cost of buying new. While certified pre-owned cars do generally cost a little less than new cars at most Glendale area dealerships, there isn’t a huge difference, at least, not as big a difference as there is between the cost of new and otherused cars.
CPO vs. Used: The Certification Process
How does a pre-owned car get certified? Each manufacturer has a different set of standards, but there are some commonalities:
- The car must not be older than a specific age (i.e., 5 years old)
- The odometer must not have over a specific number of miles on it (this typically ranges from 50,000 – 80,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer)
- The car must pass an inspection that is designed by the manufacturer (typically a 140+ point inspection)
